Excess funds may be transferred to the Tony & Anita Avent Endowment for the Juniper Level Botanic Garden at the JC Raulston Arboretum.

DESCRIPTION:Tony and Anita will be opening their 4 acre home garden for a JLBG Endowment Fundraiser on Friday\, June 14\, 2024 from 3-8pm. This will be the first of what we hope will become an annual event. Tickets are $1000 per individual or $1500 per couple. Proceeds from the event will support the Tony & Anita Avent Endowment for the Juniper Level Botanic Garden. Tony and our garden staff will be on hand to chat with you and answer questions. Our partners at NC State will also be available to talk with you about the JLBG Endowment at NC State. The event will include heavy hors d’oeuvres while you enjoy the garden. Janet Draper has spent her career chasing information\, only to discover that there is a huge difference between information and knowledge in the world of horticulture.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJanet Draper \n\n\n\nMary Livingston Ripley Garden Horticulturist\, Smithsonian GardensWashington\, D.C. \n\n\n\nJanet Draper earned a degree in Horticulture from Purdue University\, then spent the next ten years really learning through working in perennial nurseries in the U.S.\, Germany and England putting plants in little black plastic pots. Finally\, she started putting plants in the ground and really seeing what they did through years of private estate work.

DESCRIPTION:“Spring is a spectacular time in the garden – a time when visitors can expect most of our plants to be out of the ground and in bloom\,” says Tony Avent\, founder and proprietor of JLBG. “Our gardens will have more than 3\,000 varieties of peonies\, cactuses\, irises\, hostas\, aroids – and so much more. Many of these will also be available for guests to purchase in the nursery and take home to plant in their own gardens.” \n\n\n\nIn addition to self-guided garden tours\, 15-minute “Gardening Unplugged” talks\, and access to the open greenhouses for plant purchases\, one of the highlights of the annual Spring Garden Party is the DIY floral hat decorating contest – open to all visitors during both weekends of the Open Nursery Days. Entries will be photographed at the welcome tent upon arrival and voted on the Plant Delights Nursery Facebook page following the second weekend. Winners will be announced on Facebook and receive Plant Delights Nursery gift certificates. \n\n\n\n“The hat contest was a big hit last spring and we’re really looking forward to bringing the experience back for this year’s event\,” says Avent. “It’s also fun that the second open garden weekend falls on Mother’s Day weekend\, so if families are looking for something special to do with their mother or grandmother in Raleigh\, there’s really no better place than here in the garden.” \n\n\n\nWhile exploring JLBG\, attendees will also have the opportunity to check out and purchase local pottery and stone sculptures from Jim and Kathy Phillips (May 3-5)\, and an assortment of woody plants and unusual trees and shrubs from Garden Treasures (May 10-12).
