Ever since hearing the hit song, Signs, in 1970, I’ve been fascinated with collecting images of signs around the world, as a reflection of the public conscience. Signs show the entire range human consciousness, from edgy satire to a lack of educational basics. This week, when picking up a new pair of eyeglasses, I was compelled to photograph this “keep off the grass sign”, in front of the building that houses my optician. While the diversity in the lawn comprises of a good array of the areas worst weeds as well as a collection of mosses, I was unable to actually find any turfgrass. Despite being texturally unappealing, at least we know the landlords aren’t using any weed killers. Perhaps, one day, they’ll update the sign to a more accurate, “Keep off the Weeds”.
It looks like a perfectly diverse lawn to me! Those intensely manicured lawns made of a single type of grass and
over-fertilized and doused systematically with weed killers do nothing for the diversity of nature or the ecosystem as a whole.
This looks wonderful. How about, “Keep Off the Lawn”?
At the Reagan Library signs read something like “Please stay on sidewalk, rattlesnake environment.” A beautiful setting in California.
