Where Nerines Fear to Tread

While we can grow an incredible assortment of lycoris species and cultivars in our climate, the same is not true for their amaryllid cousins in the genus, Nerine. The only Nerine that we have found so far, that truly thrives here is Nerine angustifolia. This African endemic hails from Lesotho, Swaziland, and the South Africa regions of Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Transvaal, and the Cape Province, where it grows wild in marshy grasslands. For us, this patch began flowering in early September, and continues into October. This planting is in one of the driest, unirrigated beds on our property. Sadly, this amazing plant was a terrible seller, when we offered it in 2024 and 2025, guess it should have been a pansy…go figure. Hardiness Zone 7b-10b.
