Really big, Texas-sized Hair

Big hair comes and goes in fashion, but Panicum virgatum ‘Ledbetter Blues’ takes big hair to a whole new level. This exceptional form is a Wade Roitsch (Yucca Do) selection from Lee County, Texas. This cultivar defies the current trend toward narrow selections, by being yuuuge. Although the size of our 3.5 year old clump of foliage isn’t outside of the normal size, the huge flower heads take up a 7′ tall x 12′ wide space in the garden. We haven’t decided whether to propagate this yet, so our question is if anyone would purchase such a large plant?

  1. Reminds me of ‘Cloud Nine’ panicum—beautiful, but so huge I had to take it out after only two years—so I wouldn’t be planting Ledbetter if it ever was offered.
