Looking absolutely ravishing in the October garden is the Texas/Mexico native Lindheimer’s Muhly, Muhlenbergia lindheimeri. Named after the Father of Texas Botany, German immigrant, Ferdinand Lindheimer (1801-1879), this amazing ornamental grass does its namesake proud.
The 3′ tall x 5′ wide semi-evergreen clump of thin, glaucous-green foliage is topped with rigid plumes to 6′ tall x 8′ wide. The recent photo below is our 26 year old clump. Muhlenbergia lindheimeri is incredibly heat and drought tolerant, and thrives in a wide range of soil and growing conditions, except for those that remain wet. It’s been over a decade since we’ve offered this, so that’s a long enough break, so it’s designated for a spring return. Hardiness is Zone 6b-9b, at least.
