Putting on an incredible show now is one of my favorite evergreen magnolias, Magnolia crassipes ‘Purple Queen’. This amazing selection comes from legendary Japanese nurseryman, Akari Shibimichi. Our four year-old plant is now 7′ tall x 7′ wide. Both the floral show and delicious fragrance are outstanding. Magnolia crassipes is the purple-flowering counterpart to the commonly-grown, cream-flowered Magnolia figo. Apologies for the scale (now dead), which happened when we moved this into a more stressful, sunny location.
It’s been on my wishlist for awhile now. Hope you have this in production soon.
Recommendations for killing magnolia scale? I think I got it off my Magnolia x foggi Allspice, but I am watching suspiciously this year. Ugly insects.
We hesitate giving pest recommdatioons since different pesticides are available in different states, so check with your county extension service. We’ll try to prop a few for the Southeastern Plant Symposium Rare Plant Auction in early June.
It survives the winter there ?
Our plants have been undamaged since 2022.
