Ten months ago, we wrote about our purchase of a special, one of a kind, variegated form of Agave utahensis, that we named Agave ‘Liberty’. Because of its size, we knew it would be flowering soon, and as such, permanently lost. Before it initiated flower buds, we beheaded it, which in theory, should cause it to offset. I say, in theory, because we’ve never tried it with Agave utahensis. Well, for almost ten months, it looked like dead stump, as our hope dwindled, but finally last week, the first sign of a new sprout appeared. It will most likely take another four months before its large enough to be removed and hopefully rooted, but at least we have some sign of life. Oh boy, this one is gonna be a long wait. Any chance it can get into TC? ‘White Rhino’ and ‘Orizaba’ finally went mainstream, hopefully a variegated utahensis can as well.
It’s just too slow of a grower to ever become commercial…sadly.
