In this April combination, we have used the heat-tolerant coral bells, Heuchera ‘Smoke and Mirrors’, and for a contrasting textural border, we used the ornamental onion, Allium kiiense. I wish more people realize how great this onion is, when used as a liriope/carex-like border. It looks great all during the growing season, and when it finally bursts into flower in October…WOW!.
We are open this weekend and the next 2 weekends, May 9-11 and May 16-18, 2025 for our Spring Open Nursery and Garden weekends. Come get inspiration for your own garden, engage with our experts, shop the greenhouses and our first ever spring sale, free garden talks and much more! See you in the garden.

Do you think the ornamental onion could help keep bunnies away, when used as a border near their special snacking plants?
And maybe voles?
Great question, but we don’t have any first hand experience from which to answer.
