On a recent trip to visit our friends at Garden Treasures, we found our collection of Acer palmatum cultivars expanding once again…the nature of our OCD affliction. The diversity of the genus is quite amazing, as our collection at JLBG now tops 90 different selections. Below are a few that I photographed recently in the gardens at JLBG.
Acer palmatum‘ Yuri Hime’ is a dwarf that matures around 2′ tall x 3′ wide.

Acer palmatum ‘Koto-no-ito’ is another favorite, with very narrow, fine-textured foliage. This matures around 14′ tall x 10′ wide.

Acer palmatum ‘Mikawa Yatsubusa’ is another compact grower. A well-grown specimen can reach 5′ tall in 10 years, eventualy to 15′ tall x 20′ wide in 50 years.

Acer palmatum ‘Summer Gold’ has lovely chartreuse yellow foliage. The foliage emerges chartreuse and brightens as the weather warms. Based on our observations, expect a 10′ tall tree in ten years.
