Just finishing it’s flowering for the year is our specimen of Cylindropuntia kleinii. This North American native to the Chihuahuan desert regions of Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma, forms a 5′ tall, gnarly specimen, composed of long, jointed sections, that break away as they become attached to anything that tries to pass to near. Many people theorize that this is an ancient, now stable hybrid of Cylindropuntia leptocaulis and Cylindropuntia imbricata. This particular accession hails from the Big Bend region of Texas. We have grown this for decades, where it thrives, despite our humid, higher rainfall climate. Good drainage in our dryland berm is the key. Hardiness Zone 5b-9b, at least.
