We wanted to publicly recognize our friend, plant breeder, Hans Hansen of Walters Gardens, who was just granted his 516th plant patent. Of those incredible numbers, 18 patents came when he worked for Shady Oaks Nursery, and 498 were granted since he moved to Walters Gardens in 2009. To give you some perspective, only six companies (not individuals) in the history of the US Patent Office have more plant patents. Those companies are: Yoder Brothers (997), Ball Horticulture (645), Klehm and Son (560), Dummen Orange (552), Terra Nova (545), and Poulsen Roses with 536.
Quite the accomplishment for a young man. Plenty of time to double that. Hopefully this one’s another mangave!
