Flowering a new plant for the first time is always exciting, and this week we enjoyed our first Habranthus ruber. This Brazillian rain lily is quite rare, and probably only a few exist in the US. We’ve already selfed this to get seed, and we also spread its pollen far and wide to other rain lilies to see what color combinations might be possible. We doubt this will be reliably winter hardy for us in Zone 7b, but it should produce fascinating offspring.
Incrediable color, too bad it won’t be hardy in my 7a-6b garden. I love it.
Why want my rain lilies bloom or I get just one?
I Love the red color. Mine are the light pink.
Rain lilies have a set season of bloom, and within that time period, flowering is triggered by rains. Too much shade will also keep them from flowering, but that’s about it.
Wow, what a fabulous color! My pink ones are blooming right now.
What about 8a? Beautiful rich color.
We need more trialing to know for sure.
It’s gorgeous! I would love to try it in a container since I live in NH
Do you plant it from seed?
If we can get it to set seed, it will come true.
