During our recent Summer Open Nursery and Garden, I was able to spend a good bit of time with former JLBG staffer, Jeremy Schmidt, now of HortCo, to discuss our plans to rework an old rock wall in our Sunken Garden. With our plans now in place, we have already begun to relocate existing plants, which will be in the way of the demolition, and construction. When the existing dry stacked wall was installed 25 years ago, we gave no thought to being able to grow plants among the rocks, so the current plan will be to unstack the existing wall, and re-design it with a more informal design style, adding several tons of new boulders. The plan will also include pockets of crevice areas, cut-in viewing areas, picnic seating, and an additional 100 yards of soil mix.
We are currently on schedule to start October 1, and Jeremy estimates the project will take between 10 and 12 days of work. Since teaching is a key component of what we do, both Jeremy and I would like to open this up to volunteers, who would like to learn by assisting in this truly transformative project.
