Our native switch grass, Panicum virgatum is at the height of its popularity, but that’s getting ready to expand with the introduction of two unique new selections. Panicum virgatum ‘Blue Spear’, from plant breeder Hans Hansen of Walters Gardens, created an entirely new type of inflorescence, that he calls, fused panicles. This gives the grass a completely different look in the garden, and a much narrower profile that the typical, open, fluffy flower panicles. We have been watching these in development for many years, so are thrilled to see the first selection finally being released.
Below that is the first named, variegated foliage Panicum virgatum ‘Switcheroo’, from Walter Gardens. This is, yet, another very exciting development in the genus. These should be included in the January 2027 PDN catalog.
