Tall Drops of Snow

Flowering now at JLBG is Galanthus elwesii ‘Mt. Everest’, a truly an amazing introduction in an already crowded field of snowdrops. This Galanthus elwesii selection appeared as a seedling for Holland’s Kwekerij De Schullhorn. It flowers on the early end of the galanthus season for most of the snowdrops we grow. We especially love the huge flowers and wide glaucous leaves. This is a four year old clump, growing in light shade.

On a 2020 UK trip, I was fortunate to visit with Colesbourne Gardens owners, and descendants of the late Henry John (H.J.) Elwes, for whom this snowdrop species was named in 1875.
