Looking fabulous as we head into the heat of summer, is the grey-haired Brazilian sword fern – Pleopeltis lepidopteris ‘Morro dos Conventos’. We introduced this amazing fern in 2018 from a 2012 Yucca Do spore collection from its native range along the sea coasts in Southern Brazil. This evergreen sun lover naturally grows among rocks in well-drained soil, so that’s the ideal habitat. This is quite slow to propagate and get established, but your patience will be rewarded with a patch like we have below consisting of three original potted plants. Hardiness Zone: 7b to 9b, at least.

What are the watering needs for this Brazilian sword fern? Given full sun and lithophytic description, I’m thinking perhaps doesn’t need a lot of water? But then it’s a fern, and also grows towards seacoast, so maybe needs more water?

It likes it pretty darn dry after establishment, although it’s surprisingly tolerant of irrigation also.
