A Flava-rite Flavor

It’s hard to miss the giant Hedychium flavum (no relation to the rapper, Flavor Flav) in the garden this month. I first met this gem of a ginger lily years ago, when I was botanizing in Northern Vietnam, near the town of Sapa, where the arching stems were easy to spot, hanging from the steep cliffs. In the gardens, it’s been an amazing performer, forming large masses of 7′ tall stems, topped, starting for us in August with terminal spikes of very large yellow flowers.

  1. I remember accompanying Nick Macer in the mountains near Sapa as he collected Daphniphyllum macropodum, Schefflera actinophylla and Luculia gratissima. TLH
