Our specimen of Mahonia ‘Marvel’ is in full flower today. This curious plant from Georgia’s Ozzie Johnson is reportedly a seedling of Mahonia x media ‘Charity’, and while it shares the flower characteristics of the parent, I’m not sure what odd mutation occurred to remove all of the leaf spines. We think this is a dramatic improvement over all of the Mahonia x media hybrids, which we also treasure. The sweetly-scented flowers of the fall/winter flowering mahonias are prized by an array of bee species at a time of year when nectar is at a low ebb.

what conditions does this plant thrive in?
Best in part to full sun, average soil moisture to fairly dry.
