I was just photographing our 21 year old specimen of Abelia x grandiflora ‘Mardi Gras’, and as we like to do, took measurements, which showed our plant is now 8′ tall x 10′ wide. I should also note that this is growing in an unirrigated part of the garden, without benefit of fertilizer. Just for kicks, I checked most commercial websites, who pretty much all have it listed as maturing at 3′ tall x 5′ wide. I’d say that’s a pretty big ooops. Imagine how many plants would be smothered if you actually planted it on the recommended spacing. This again illustrates why you should visit botanic gardens, and take your own measurements, before planting any plant in the wrong location. I hope you’ll also take time to share the true measurements with those plants vendors who share the incorrect information.. Hardiness Zone is Zone 6a-9a.

This couldn’t have come at a better time for me! I’ve been searching for this variety for weeks, hoping to plant one in my small yard this fall. I love the colors and had [naively] believed it was a compact variety as described online. Thank you for saving me from a big future headache!
