Looking great in the garden in summer is our new selection of bamboo muhly grass, Muhlenbergia dumosa ‘Patagonia’. Prior to this introduction, this splendid ornamental grass could only be overwintered from Zone 9 south. This Patrick McMillan collection adds at least one additional hardiness zone for gardeners. To achieve maximum winter hardiness, it needs summer heat, good drainage, and plenty of full sun. Although it’s slow to get started in spring, it really picks up speed, once it becomes miserable for humans. We were a bit late dividing it last fall, and consequently our spring crop wasn’t rooted well enough to ship until early summer, but it’s great now. Although, it’s a clumping grass, the foliage arches out to 7′ in width, and 5′ in height. Hardiness Zone 8a-10b.
