Flowering this week is the fascinating Asarum speciosum, native to only three counties in central Alabama. In bloom, it resembles a mass of bloodshot eyes peeking out from beneath the skirt of anise-scented foliage.
Here’s looking at you, kid
Asarum, native, native gingers, native groundcovers, native perennials, native plants, North American natives, shade, shade gardening, shade loving perennials, shade loving plants, shade perennials, wild ginger, wild ginger flower
Have these been crossed with the Asian gingers? I’m surprised how long the flowers for “king kong” have lasted. Maybe cross this with king kong for bigger flowers?
We are not aware of any hybrids between the Asian and North American asarum, although it’s a project we’d love to tackle if we had the funds for more staff.
