Looking particularly phallic in the garden is our twelve year old specimen of Carpinus betulus ‘Columnaris Nana’ This slow growing, dwarf selection of European hornbeam eventually matures with great age at 22′ tall, so our 6′ tall plant still has a ways to go. We really like these as a garden feature where a non-pruned deciduous vertical accent is needed.

I came across a more feminine tree at JLBG’s recent spring open garden that deserves equal time here, haha! Her name is Carolina Sweetheart. This is a plant that my wife is jealous of, I like to call her, “My little Redbud’. I recently acquired a nice specimen for our garden and my wife will just have to get over her jealousy. (I tried to upload a picture but was blocked) Cercis canadensis ‘NCCC1’ PP 27,712 was co-developed by JC Raulston and the the NC Nursery and Landscape Assoc.
