Epimedium breeding has come so far in the last few years, they look nothing like some of the still commonly sold selections. Below are just a few fairy wings that look amazing now at JLBG from our recent photo sessions.
Looking absolutely amazing in the garden is Epimedium ‘Lyrical Lemonade’. In the history of fairy wings, there have been few selections with this much flower power. We were honored to be able to introduce this Hans Hansen creation in 2023. For us, it makes a 16″ tall clump to 4′ wide. Hardiness is Zone 5a-8b.

Epimedium ‘Hugs and Kisses’ in a very showy selection from Hans Hansen/Walters Gardens.

Epimedium ‘Woodland Elf’ is yet another amazing new introduction from Hans Hansen’s work at Walters Gardens.

Although the individual flowers on Roy Lancaster’s Epimedium stellatum ‘Wudang Star’ aren’t as large, the sheer number of flowers make this a showy specimen, even from 50′ away. It’s been 8 years since we offered this, so perhaps a return engagement is in order.

When we lived in St. Paul, Mn, I walked the dogs around the block and one house I often stopped at, (I knew the owner) I would pull weeds along the sidewalk and admire the plants I didn’t know. It turned out to be a few epimediums. They were close to the house and got little direct light. This was about a decade ago when St. Paul was still zone 4; it is now zone 5. I think I’ll get a few for myself now!
Great story…thanks for sharing.
