Summer garden

Summer 2024 has been an interesting one from a weather perspective. As of August 5, we had recorded 48 days above 90 F. We were well on our way to the 2010 record of 91 days, when the jet stream dropped, and the weather cooled. The hot stretch included an all-time high temperature record of 106 degrees F. on July 5. I should mention that Raleigh only started keeping temperature records in 1948.

After 23 days of no rain, the shift in the jet stream brought over 8” of welcome rain in just over a week. This was followed by the remnants of Hurricane Debby, which added another 4.37” of rain. When I say the rain was welcome, I really mean welcome. On June 14, we awoke to find our four main wells that supply the nursery and garden, unfunctional. Panic was the order of the day, which stretched into an entire week of nail-biting and sleepless nights. 

One well was back on-line before noon the first day, when we discovered that it was only a back-feed left open that had drained the reserve reservoir. The other three wells required more expert care, so we waited with bated breath to see if our well experts from Raleigh’s Woodall Pump could squeeze us in. Fortunately, they arrived within a day, and quickly discovered that the second well had a faulty sensor, and all we needed to do was wait for it to arrive after being ordered. During this time, both garden and nursery staff were scrambling with water hoses and watering cans to keep everything alive as best we could.
