Looking good in the garden this week, are two of the Ice N’ Roses’, sterile lenten rose hybrids. Helleborus x glandorfensis ‘Ice N’ Roses Rose’ (top), and ‘Rosado’ (below). Because of the Helleborus niger parentage, all flowers face outward. Mark your calendar to visit the gardens during our Winter Open Nursery and Garden weekends, Feb.
Here is another member of the early-winter flowering Helleborus x lemperi hybrids, Helleborus ‘Leona’. I’d say, she’s looking quite ravishing in the garden for mid-January. All Helleborus x lemperi are sterile hybrids and created by crossing Hellborus niger with Helleborus x hybridus.

Flowering for us, just after the Christmas rose, Helleborus niger, are the Helleborus x lemperi group. These hybrids represent crosses between Helleborus niger, which only comes in white flowers, and the slightly later group of Helleborus x hybridus, which come in a range of colors. These sterile hybrids flower with, or slightly after the Christmas

One of the most fascinatingly demure lenten roses is the Bear’s claw, Helleborus foetidus, which is flowering now in the garden. This Western European native is one of the species with an upright stalk, compared to most species which have a horizontal, subterranean stem. Not only is Helleborus niger flowering now at JLBG, but many of the hybrid hellebores with it in their parentage are also flowering. While Helleborus niger only comes in white or with a faint pink blush, when it is hybridized in combination with other species, the potential flower color expands, but the out-facing flower trait
With the consistent cold of late December/early January in our area, the flowering show of Christmas rose, Helleborus niger is lasting longer than is normal for us.
