This simple combination of Geranium ‘Azure Rush’ and Tradescantia pallida is one that repeats several places in the garden. The geranium flowers from spring to frost, and the Tradescantia, which is perennial here, also looks good throughout the growing season. While this combination echoes colors, it contrasts form and texture.

Or a Geranium phaeum like cv, ‘Samobor’; the black markings on the leaves (and dark purple flowers) are echoed by Tradescantia pallida.
My tradescantia is the green-leafed variety with startlingly blue flowers. It is also highly invasive–having spread from my yard to the neighbor’s. I pull it out but any tiny piece of root left in the earth bursts forth with vigor. Tradescantia is one of those plants I would NEVER PLANT!
The running tradescantias, of which this is not, can be a garden thug, but they fit no meaningful definintion of invasive (i.e. invading a functional natural ecosytem, displacing natives, and causing economic harm once population equilibrium has been reached). Assuming that because one member of a genus is too agressive, that all members of the same genus would be equally aggressive, simply isn’t an accurate assumption.
