Brown is a color too…Cycas after a hard winter

I know brown foliage freaks out many gardeners, but we were thrilled how well our cycad collection fared during our cold winter.  We expect the foliage on all Cycas species to turn brown below 12 degrees F, but if you grow these, look closely at the base and you’ll probably see that the very base of the stems are still green and the caudex (the hard thing that the fronds emerge from) is solid.  Usually about 4 weeks after you cut back the fronds, the new fronds will emerge.  We usually wait and cut these back in late March and by May they should look fabulous.  Just the idea that we can grow some cycads outdoors in the ground in our climate is amazing.  http://www.plantdelights.com/Cycas-for-sale/Buy-Cycads/Hardy-Perennials/
