We are just wrapping up the early spring lily season in the garden, and here are few we captured images of this year. Lilium formosanum var. pricei ‘Hehuan’ is a dwarf form of the Taiwan lily, from our 2008 expedition, collected at 9,300′. It blooms two months before the much taller, lowland form Lilium formosanum […]
Our oldest clumps of Heuchera ‘Smoke and Mirrors’ are still looking great after nine years in the garden. Most modern coral bells have a garden life expectancy about as long as an unwatered and unplanted cell pack of annuals. We’re thrilled to have such amazing clones, such as this Walters Gardens introduction, to share.
This simple combination of Geranium ‘Azure Rush’ and Tradescantia pallida is one that repeats several places in the garden. The geranium flowers from spring to frost, and the Tradescantia, which is perennial here, also looks good throughout the growing season. While this combination echoes colors, it contrasts form and texture.
Almost two years ago, when I first saw photos of Zantedeschia ‘Frozen Queen’, I was overly skeptical that this was the result of A-I or Photoshop. To find out for sure, I ordered a few for the garden to see for myself. Well, after over a year in the ground, below are the plants in

On a recent trip to visit our friends at Garden Treasures, we found our collection of Acer palmatum cultivars expanding once again…the nature of our OCD affliction. The diversity of the genus is quite amazing, as our collection at JLBG now tops 90 different selections. Below are a few that I photographed recently in the

One of our jack-in-the-pulpit hybrids that has looked fabulous in the garden this spring is Arisaema x trigesii ‘Zebra Stripes’. This selection is from our cross of the North American native Arisaema triphyllum and the Chinese native, Arisaema fargesii. This selection has amazing vigor, and we look forward to the day that we will have

It’s been over six years since we planted our first Pinellia ‘Purple Dragon’ in the garden, and we continue to be enthralled by it’s garden performance. If you don’t know the genus, Pinellia, it’s effectively an all-season flowering cousin of arisaema (Jack-in-the-pulpit). Down here in the south, we affectionally call ’em Redneck Jack-in-the-pulpits. While many

Looking quite dazzling recently is our color echo using the flowers of the voodoo lily, Amorphophallus konjac ‘Shredded Umbrellas’, to pick up the same tone in the bark of the crape myrtle, Lagerostroemia faurei ‘Townhouse’. We doubt that’s a combo you’ve seen in the pages of your favorite garden design magazines.
