Flowering now is a new eryngium for us, the South American Eryngium elegans. Our plant comes from a Mark Weathington collection in Uruguay. Despite only being in our trials for a year and a half, we are quite smitten. The amazing, 7′ tall branched flower spike towers above the basal rosette of foliage. We’ll need a bit more time to get this properly evaluated, but so far we and the native pollinators are blown away by its garden potential.
Wow! Any evident barriers to hybridization with hardy European E. species?
I’m not aware of anyone who has tried to cross these and the European species, but it would certainly be a worth breeding project.
I joined this blog after hearing you speak at the VA Master Gardener College, knowing I probably couldn’t keep up with reading it each day. Wanted to comment and say, boy I was wrong!
