Fall Vignette

Here’s another picture that shows contrasting forms and textures in the garden. In the center is a Cryptomeria japonica Gracilis’, backed by a clump of cast iron plant, Aspidistra sichuanensis ‘Spotty’. Rounding out the combination in the front is Alstroemeria psittacina ‘Variegata’

  1. Very Pretty!! Can you tell me, is the Alstroemeria winter hardy here in Raleigh NC? Will the leaves survive above ground in winter here? Your entry for this plant on PD website says:

    “Dormancy: Winter”
    and
“After flowering, Alstroemeria psittacina ‘Variegata’ goes semi-dormant for the summer, re-emerging in September.”

    1. It’s not quite that simple. It is a winter grower, so in some climates, it will remain evergreen. There is a temperature at which the foliage will burn to the ground, although it will start to re-grow after such temperatures. Sorry, but we don’t recall the exact temp, but probably in the 15-20 degree F range. In the northern end of the range, due to consistent cold temperatures, you probably won’t see foliage again until late winter.
