Living in the community of Juniper Level, there should be little surprise that we have a significant collection of junipers from around the world. One of the rarest and most unusual is Juniperus cedrus (Canary Island Juniper). This native to high elevations in the Canary Islands, almost went extinct, due to overharvesting, which is now, thankfully, better managed. Despite its tropical origins, it has shockingly thrived here at JLBG. If you compare climates, there should be nothing from the Canary Islands that could withstand temperatures of single digits F, yet this plant never got the memo. So far, it’s sailed through 7 degrees F. in Raleigh. In the wild, it can reach a staggering 100′ in height, although we expect the garden size to be a bit shorter, in the 20-30′ range. Hardiness Zone 7b-10b.

do hope you have a propagation plan for that plant
We don’t, but we may stick a few for a future Southeast Plant Symposium auction as time permits.
