This Peppermint Stick takes a lickin’ and keeps on ticking

We had to share a recent photo of the amazing Arundo donax ‘Peppermint Stick’. This is a classic “Go Big or Go Home” ornamental grass is for those who have a large enough garden. This stunning European native is best known as the source of fiber to make reeds for wood instruments. We love it not only for it’s incredible color, but also that it neither runs via long rhizomes or produces seed. This clump is now 20 years old. When I was growing up, we grew a similar variegated clone that turned all green in summer. All that changed with the introduction of Arundo ‘Peppermint Stick’ by the late Greg Speichert. It’s tolerant of both moist and fairly dry soils. Hardiness Zone 6a-9b. These will be available in our upcoming August catalog.
