Trumpeting Bugleweed

Early April is peak time at JLBG for Ajuga flowering, commonly known as bugleweed. We think these amazing new cultivars are a great solution to reducing the need for mulch in sun to part sun landscaped areas. Some of the new colored leaf cultivars are even more spectacular when in flower…below are a few.

Ajuga ‘Parrot Paradise’
Ajuga reptans ‘XXL’ (sport of ‘Black Scallop’)
Ajuga tenorii ‘Fancy Finch’
Ajuga reptans ‘Tropical Toucan’

How do you control ajuga wilt? My ajuga is devastated every summer in my Zone 9b Louisiana garden. It comes back, but in some years I lose most of it.

  2. once upon a time a neighbor in Laurel Hills had three colors of ajuha in the front yard, which was nearly all full sun. there were individual patches of white ajuga, pink ajuga, and light blue ajuga. when that house was torn down I tried transplanting some in my (mostly dry shade) yard, with no success. the lot was bought and built on and variously planted. I never saw such ajuga again. Have you?

    1. Yes, there are a couple of white flowered ajuga clones, but they are hard to find. The best pink one currently on the market is A. reptans ‘Pink Lightning’. The most common color is the blue/purple flowered clones.
