Iris unguicularis in flower in winter

Another favorite of winter is Iris unguicularis…the winter-blooming iris.  I just snapped this photo of a clump that’s been flowering for weeks here in the gardens.  Iris unguicularis is relatively easy to grow if given a part or full sun site with good drainage.  For us, we get random fall flowering that gives rise to

New plants for 2015 – Lilies

We’ve been lily fans for quite a while, and have spent decades collecting unique lilies that are quite different from the short, stiff Asiatic lilies that are so prevalent in box stores. Our 2015 introduction,  Lilium davidii ‘Lite Lunch’ came from a former staffer, David Lee, who purchased this lily bulb for lunch from a

Cyclamen hederifolium in the winter garden

I just snapped this image of Cyclamen hederifolium in the garden this morning…only a couple of days removed from a low of 12 degrees F.  These are so wonderful in the woodland winter garden.  Be sure to plant cyclamen where they will stay fairly dry in the late spring and summer when they are dormant.

This full sun salvia has an incredible number of flowers and a longer flowering period compared to everything else on the market.  Hardiness is at least, Zone 4a

Happy New Year – More new plants….baptisia

I hope everyone had a wonderful new year and are recovering/gardening as your prior celebratory evening permits.  Continuing to showcase some of our 2015 introductions, we’ll focus today on baptisia…a genus on which we’ve spent a good bit of time. Baptisia minor ‘Blue Bonnet’ is a fabulous, early-flowering, heavy-blooming selection of the US native Baptisia minor,

Gold-leaf Bletilla and Giant Elephant Ear – New for 2015 Preview

As we continue to preview a few of our new plants for 2015, here is a plant we’ve lusted after for years, and are finally able to share.  Bletilla striata ‘Ogon’ is a very rare, gold-leafed selection of the hardy orchid.  It’s hard to really capture the color well with my photographic skills, but it’s

New for 2015 – Asarum (Wild Gingers)

New for 2015 is Asarum nobilissimum ‘King Kong’.  This Plant Delights selection has massive 4″ wide flowers which are yellow with purple specks, compared to the typical darker purple flower.  We’re guessing this should be a Zone 7a plant at least. Asarum inflatum ‘Shanghai’ is an incredible wild ginger from plantsman Jim Waddick. It’s taken
