Helleborus x hybridus ‘Golden Lotus’ (Double Yellow)

Here’s a lovely clump of Helleborus x hybridus ‘Golden Lotus’ in the gardens today, here at Juniper Level.  Only a couple of years ago, double yellow-flowering hellebores were so rare, they would have cost you your first born…not any longer.    http://www.plantdelights.com/Hellebores/Helleborus-for-sale/buy-Lenten-Rose/Hellebore-plants/

Cardamine – a great winter perennial

Although it’s three weeks later than normal, one of our favorite winter-flowering native perennials is at peak now…Cardamine douglasii ‘Southern Lady’.  Enjoy it now since it goes dormant by mid-spring…great in the light shade garden with hellebores!  http://www.plantdelights.com/Cardamine-for-sale/buy-Toothwort/Woodland-Garden/

Brown is a color too…Cycas after a hard winter

I know brown foliage freaks out many gardeners, but we were thrilled how well our cycad collection fared during our cold winter.  We expect the foliage on all Cycas species to turn brown below 12 degrees F, but if you grow these, look closely at the base and you’ll probably see that the very base

Selaginella tamariscina ‘Golden Sprite’

This was our coldest winter since we began growing the dwarf Japanese Selaginella tamariscina forms outdoors, so we are thrilled to find how well they sailed through our cold weather.  Here is Selaginella ‘Golden Sprite’ in our rock garden…very tiny and very slow growing, but sooo cute!  http://www.plantdelights.com/Selaginella-for-sale/buy-Spikemoss/Groundcovers-for-Shade/

What lovely teeth you have, Podophyllum pleianthum

The giant Chinese mayapples have emerged in the last couple of days.  Here is Podophyllum pleianthum showing off its fascinating leaf edges..a soft eyelash-like fringe around the edge of each leaf.  You’d never guess that mayapples are actually in the barberry family!  Podophyllum pleianthum emerges from the ground in bud, so it won’t be long

Great winter foliage- Dentaria (toothwort)

Another of my favorite plants of winter are the toothworts.  Here is Dentaria diphylla aka: Cardamine diphylla in the garden yesterday.  The foliage emerges in winter, making a lovely groundcover.  We’ll see the short stalks of small, but cute flowers in a few more weeks, before most species go summer dormant.  Dentaria diphylla has a

Edgeworthia chrysantha ‘Snow Cream’

With a much sweeter fragrance that the skunk cabbage, here’s a photo of Edgeworthia chrysantha ‘Snow Cream’ from the garden today with its daphne-like flowers.  I can’t imagine gardening without this as part of the winter garden.  http://www.plantdelights.com/Edgeworthia-for-sale/buy-Paper-Plant/Flowers-with-Nectar/

The smells of late winter…skunk cabbage

A sure garden sign that winter is nearing the end is the flowerring of our first aroid of the year…the lovely and beautiful ….wait, probably not the best choice of words…Symplocarpus foetidus.  The flowers of skunk cabbage use thermogenesis to produce enough heat to melt through several feet of snow to allow its fragrance to

Cyclamen coum silver leaf form

Here’s a photo of a clump of Cyclamen coum in the garden today.  These have been in full flower for over a month now, despite the snow and ice.  I can’t imagine a woodland garden without these gems…the key is to keep the soil fairly dry when they are summer dormant.  http://www.plantdelights.com/Cyclamen-for-sale/buy-Cyclamen/Perennial/
