Drab Native

Draba is a genus of 431 species of mostly small, rock garden-sized plants in the cabbage family. The majority of the drabas grown in gardens are European, although the US can claim about 100 species. The majority of those are either native to the far West or far North in alpine climates. Only 2-3 species are Southeast US natives and are subsequently tolerant of our heat and humidity. One of our favorites is Draba ramosissima, which has just finished flowering. We grew this for over a decade in the woodland garden before trying a piece in the crevice garden where it has thrived, as you can see below. Here, it gets 2-3 hours of morning sun. Average to dry soil is best. Hardiness zones: 4a-8b.
