Heavy Metal Sedge

Here’s a new one for most gardeners, Carex metallica ‘Fade to Green’, in full flower in our woodland garden this week. We’re not aware of anyone who has grown this evergreen sedge ornamentally. This is our 2008 collection from Taiwan’s Alishan Mountain. We haven’t offered it yet, since we don’t expect the demand would be particularly high, although it has performed quite well in our trials. Although the original band members are now on up in years, they aren’t nearly as old as this sedge, which was first published as a new species in 1908. Hardiness is at least Zone 7b-9a, but it could wind up being far more winter hardy.

  1. These posts are the BEST idea you’ve had yet. I have enjoyed reading each and every one. So far, the trillium post has been my favorite/most descriptive/interesting.
Thank you for your humor and sharing your horticulture wisdom. You are a treasure.
