Amorphophallus krausii ‘Son of La’ is a giant, winter hardy selection of the non-offsetting Amorphophallus krausii, from an Alan Galloway collection, on our 2005 expedition, when it was discovered in the province of Son La, Vietnam, near Dien Bien Phu, at 4,573′ elevation. Alan had grown this selection outdoors in his Raleigh garden for years, prior to his untimely death, and since that time, those two clumps have thrived here at JLBG. This is the tallest winter hardy love lily we know, reaching 8-9′ from ground to the tallest leaf. The incredibly impressive 5′ tall flower stalks, with a creamy spadix surrounded by a green hood, open for us in mid-July. It’s not easy from cuttings, but it looks like we’ll finally have enough to share by January 2028…fingers crossed. Below is a mid-August photo taken recently.
Hi Tony, I just read the article on Son of La. As a collector of.Amorphophallus I am super excited to get my hands on Son of La! Great to hear it’s “Winter Hardy” but leaving in NJ my garden has had MANY Amorphophallus Konjac grow and thrive for many cold winters making it also hardy! Funny thing is, I never planted them. They were planted by the squirrels and chipmunks. I’d like to give one of my plants to Dave Chopko to see if it’ll come back in his garden in Boonton, NJ. It should be fine because he’s warmer than where I live. I know you have given Roberta some ferns to check the zone on them and she’s planted them in her garden. I would like to plant other varieties of Konjac to see their hardiness in New Jersey. BTW- Tighty Mighty is doing great! Suzy Ludwig
