Three years ago, we wrote about our success growing the Western US (North Dakota to Southern California) desert native, Stanleya pinnata, Desert Prince’s Plume. In the years since, we planted more, with our recent attempts being in the crevice garden, where, as you can see below, they have thrived. The key for success is superb drainage. We grew our first plants in light shade, but these are also thriving in half day full sun. We’ve even grown seed from our original garden specimen, which we have made available through Plant Delights this year.
Since we’re at the start of the NHL playoff season for Lord Stanley’s Cup, we wanted to remind you of the hockey connection. Stanleya pinnata was named after Lord Earl Smith-Stanley, The English 13th Earl of Derby (1775-1851) , who was quite a naturalist and president of the Linnean Society. The NHL Ice Hockey trophy is named after his relative Lord Frederick Arthur Stanley (1841-1908).
