This year, we introduced an amazing new Chinese collection of the shade-loving Mioga ginger, that we named Zingiber mioga ‘Lushan Gold’, from an Atlanta Botanical Garden expedition. It’s amazing, first, in that it clumps, instead or runs like many forms of the species. We grew quite a few from seed, looking for any that might have a heavier flower show. We selected four for further in-ground trials. Below is the fruit set on one of those selected, looking quite lovely this week. Typical Zingiber mioga flowers so late, that it rarely fruits in our climate, but the much earlier flowering of Zingiber ‘Lushan Gold’ ensures that we always see the amazing fruit show. Hardiness should be Zone 6a-9b.
colourful, prolific fruiting just as valuable as colourful, prolific flowers! Good selection, Tony!
