Our Favorite Christmas Box

We truly love the amazing English boxwood, Buxus sempervirens ‘Elegantissima’ in the winter garden. We’ve never been able to track down it’s origin, but we know that it was grown in Europe around 1860. We’ve grown this in both sun and light shade, and while it thrives in both, the density of the foliage is much nicer when it gets at least a half day of full sun. This sun planting went in the ground 9 years ago, and the plants are now 6′ tall x 3′ wide. Our oldest plants, growing in more shade, are now 32 years old, and measure 8′ tall x 7′ wide. No shrubs at JLBG are ever sheared, so this is the natural shape.
