We love plants that look great in the woodland garden in the midst of our summer heat. Below is an image of Rohdea japonica ‘Tamagawa Ryu’, looking absolutely fabulous this week. For those who haven’t yet tried rohdeas yet, think evergreen hostas.
Rohdeas are one of our specialty collections, and the JLBG collection includes roughly 10 species with 2 varieties, 6 undetermined, 1 nothospecies, 1 undescribed, and 276 clones

Is PD working with Duane Mcdowell on importing additional varieties/clones from asia?
We are not currently working to bring in more cultivars from Japan, since we already have 276 different cultivars in the garden. You can see photos of almost 100 of those clones here. It takes 10-20 years from one plant to build up enough to sell, and even then, it’s a money-losing proposition as a nursery crop. At this time, we can’t afford any more crops that lose money.
I really hope to see some like ‘Satsumafuji’ available in the future. That white center is outstanding. Can you share some insight as to how many of those 276 cultivars you have in production for commercial sale beyond the 18 that are currently listed on the website? I am enamored with Rohdea since visiting JLBG. Haven’t bought a Hosta since.
We have 60 rohdea cultivars that we have either offered or have in the production pipeline.
im and addict! I bought 3 on my last visit. Th
