One of many incredible plants discovered by our garden staff, is an amazing selection of the native (NC to Arkansas and south to Florida) Hymenocallis occidentalis var. occidentalis, found by Jeremy Schmidt on a 2012 botanizing trip through Alabama. We’ve always loved this August-flowered spider lily, but the extraordinary floriferous nature of this discovery outshines all of the other clones we’ve grown, leading us to name it ‘Queen of Flowers’. Below is it starting in the garden in mid-August providing a striking contrast to purple-leafed elephant ears. Although it can be found in seasonal floodplains, it does not require constantly moist soils to thrive.

do yall have variety Hymenocallis occidentalis var. eulae? does this do well here in carolinas? does it indeed bloom without foliage? thanks
Yes. We have offered it for 8 years, but haven’t had enough to list since 2008.
Do you expect to offer ‘Queen of Flowers” anytime soon?
It’s not fast to multiply, so this one may take a while, unless we could find a willing tissue culture lab.
