A New Rod that’s Just Golden

Solidago brachyphylla is a little-known, fall-flowering goldenrod, native from South Carolina west to Alabama. In the wild, this rare native (G3 rank) is found in open forests, but in the garden, it performs far better in part to full sun. Unlike one of our other favorites, Solidago rugosa, this species grows in a tight clump. We have found it very easy to grow in average to dry garden soils. We’re amazed that we’ve never seen this offered for sale, so we have it in production and will be building numbers next year to hopefully remedy that situation in 2027. Since this really hasn’t been cultivated, we guessing it will have a winter hardiness of Zone 6a-9a.

  1. Thanks for taking time to show me this gem last weekend! I look forward to seeing this one in the catalog. S. austrina is another one I’d like to see grown more if it’s something y’all haven’t looked into already
