Astonishing Adonis in the Garden

Our oldest patch of Adonis amurensis ‘Fukujukai’ is now 18 years old and looking lovely in the winter garden this week. This a cold climate plant from The Russian Far East, Korea, and into Northern Japan, so it generally doesn’t love the hot, humid south, but this is one of a few clones that have thrived here. Like most spring ephemerals, it’s asleep for the year usually by early summer in NC.

  1. Mine is just waking up. What is its companion plant just behind it? What are other good companion plants (besides late sprouting hostas and ferns)?

    1. For a textural contrast, the Asian podophyllum, aspidistra, disporopsis, carex, rohdea, trillium, and sanguinaria are all great choices.

  2. This is much like my patch of the same age, but trying to find more is quite a chore. The fact that they are a sterile hybrid probably makes them difficult to propagate. I suppose at some point I will risk dividing them but I’ve always been hesitant to touch such a jewel.
