Naturalizing Agaves

We had so many century plants flower last year, we didn’t bother gathering all of the seed. In our parking lot plantings, one particular form of Agave x loferox (lophantha x pseudoferox) dropped seed throughout the bed. By fall, we noticed small agaves coming up where the seed had fallen. In 39 years of growing agaves here at JLBG, we’ve never seen this happen. Not only did they germinate, but they have now survived 14F and are growing again. Obviously, they like our soil mix that’s highly amended with Permatill, but it’s still pretty amazing that this could happen. We’re curious if others have experienced the same phenomenon.
