Looking good in the garden this week, are two of the Ice N’ Roses’, sterile lenten rose hybrids. Helleborus x glandorfensis ‘Ice N’ Roses Rose’ (top), and ‘Rosado’ (below). Because of the Helleborus niger parentage, all flowers face outward. Mark your calendar to visit the gardens during our Winter Open Nursery and Garden weekends, Feb.
Flowering for us, just after the Christmas rose, Helleborus niger, are the Helleborus x lemperi group. These hybrids represent crosses between Helleborus niger, which only comes in white flowers, and the slightly later group of Helleborus x hybridus, which come in a range of colors. These sterile hybrids flower with, or slightly after the Christmas

Coming in second place to the Helleborus niger we posted earlier is Helleborus x ballardiae ‘Mahogany Snow’. This is a cross of the Christmas rose, Helleborus niger and Helleborus lividus. The flowers emerge white, then age to a lovely salmon pink. We find this hellebore hybrid much easier to grow than either parent.
