The Rocky Jack

Looking lovely this week in the garden is the rock jack-in-the-pulpit, Arisaema saxatile. This splendid, mid-season jack hails from rocky pine forests in Sichuan and Yunnan, China, at elevations between 5,000′ and 10,000′. The Latin epithet “saxatile” translates to “grows among the rocks”. Despite it’s natural habitat in dense shade, we have found it performs quite well in several hours of sun, as you can see from the image below, taken this week. It is not a fast offsetting species, which is why it’s usually unavailable commercially. We continue to experiment with propagation techniques to build up numbers, so we can share. Hardiness zones 4a-8b.

Thank you for the stunning image of this delightful, shockingly dramatic, surely evanescent beauty. What grand delight to behold it!
