Hardy Gesneriads (Sinningia, Hemiboea, Etc) (Hardy Gloxinia)

The JLBG collection includes about 27 genera with one bigeneric cross and one unknown; 61 species and 4 unidentified;107 clones

We are currently working with 27 genera of gesneriads that we have found winter hardy or are still in trials to determine their ability to endure winter temperatures into the single digits F.  Many hardy gesneriads are rock dwellers, often either eiphytes or lithophytes, so often habitat construction is required for these to thrive under garden conditions.

The main genera we are testing are listed below.

Achimenes is a genus of 24 species, ranging from Mexico through Central America, into Northern South America.

Aeschynanthus is a large genus of 181 species native from Southern China to Tropical Asia.

Anna is a small genus of only 4 species all native to the China/Vietnam border region.

Briggsiopsis consists of a single species native to South Central China.

Conandron is a monotypic genus, native to Japan, China, Taiwan, and Vietnam.

Corallodiscus is a small genus of only 6 species, native from China into the Himalayas.

Gloxinia is a small genus of only 5 species from Central and Northern South America

Haberlea is a monotypic genus, native to the Balkans. The former genus, Jancaea is now included here.

Hemiboea is a genus of 44 species native from Vietnam to the Eastern Himalayas. The former genus, Metabriggsia is now included here.

Loxostigma is a genus of 13 species, native from the Himalayas to Indo-China (Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam). A few members of Briggsia were transferred here too.

Lysionotus is a genus of 34 species, native from the Himalayas to Indo-China (Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam).

Oreocharis is a large genus of 149 species, native from the Eastern Himalayas to Indo-China (Cambodia Laos, Vietnam). The former genera Ancylostemon, Boeica, Beccarinda, Dayaoshania, Deinocheilos, Isometrum, Opithandra, Paraisometrum, Thamnocharis and Tremacron and some Briggsia sensu strictu are now included here based on molecular work.

Petrocosmea is a genus of 62 species, native from the Eastern Himalayas to Indo-China (Cambodia Laos, Vietnam).

Primulina is a genus from China and Vietnam with more than 225 species.

Ramonda is a small genus of 4 species, native to the Balkans, and the Pyrenees.

Raphiocarpus is a genus of 16 species, native to South China and Vietnam.
