Helleborus (Lenten Rose)

The JLBG collection includes about 14 species (including subspecies and varieties), 13 nothospecies; 665 clones

Despite Helleborus being a relative small genus, hybrids made through interspecific crosses have transported the genus from one of relative obscurity to one of the worlds' most popular perennials. You'll see the amazing diversity represented through the work below.

Significant improvements in the genus are due to the amazing work of: Hellen Ballard, Eric Smith, Elizabeth Strangman, John Massey/Kevin Belcher, Glenn Withey/Charles Price, Dan Hinkley, David Culp, Ernie and Marietta O'Byrne, Dick and Judith Tyler, Hans Hansen, Rodney Davey and Lynda Windsor, and Josef Heuger.

The UK's Will McLewin must also be recognized for his incredible work studying species in the wild, and making them available. His work, The Helleborastrum problem is a monumental must-have book for OCD Hellebore enthusiasts.

Here is a summary of the names published for groups of interspecific hellebore hybrids:

  • Helleborus x ashwoodensis – H. niger x H. versicarius
  • Helleborus x ballardiae – H. lividus x H. niger (mostly sterile)
  • Helleborus x belcheri – H. niger x H. thibetanus (sterile)
  • Helleborus x ericsmithii – H. x sternii (argutifolius x lividus) x niger (mostly sterile)
  • Helleborus x hybridus – crosses involving H. atrorubens, H. dumetorum, H. orientalis, H. purpurascens, H. multifidus, H. viridis (mostly fertile)
  • Helleborus x glandorfensis – H. x ericsmithii (niger x sternii) x H. x hybridus (sterile)
  • Helleborus x iburgensis – H. x ballardiae (lividus x niger) x H. x hybridus (sterile)
